Physicians at Southwest Eye Consultants

Sara J. Haug, MD, PhD

Board-Certified Ophthalmologist

Dr. Sara Haug grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota and received her undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, with majors in chemistry and mathematics. She then pursued a master’s degree in chemical engineering and a PhD in biomedical engineering at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where she studied sympathetic nervous system modulation of blood flow in microvascular networks.

While at Yale, Dr. Haug received an individual National Research Service Award grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which funded her research. She was also awarded the Prize Teaching Fellowship from Yale University and the Young Investigator Award from the Microcirculatory Society.

Dr. Haug then moved to San Francisco to pursue her medical degree at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF), where she completed her residency in ophthalmology. Following her residency, Dr. Haug pursued a two-year vitreoretinal surgical fellowship in San Francisco at California Pacific Medical Center and West Coast Retina Medical Group.

Board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Haug specializes in treating all medical and surgical diseases of the retina, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, retinal vascular disease, choroidal melanoma, uveitis, ophthalmic trauma, and complications of cataract surgery.

Dr. Haug has published over 25 articles and book chapters and currently serves as a section editor for Review of Ophthalmology. She has also worked with Aravind Eye Hospitals in Southern India to collaborate on research projects and establish a protocol for fungal MIC testing. In addition, she has served as an investigator for over 20 national clinical trials.

Dr. Haug is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Retinal Specialists.

She and her husband have a son and enjoy spending time in the outdoors hiking, biking, skiing, or canoeing as well as reading, playing piano, and traveling.
