Glaucoma Laser Surgery Durango, CO

Skilled Eye Surgeons Throughout the Four Corners Region

Although damage to the optic nerve due to glaucoma cannot be reversed and is thus permanent, laser treatment available through Southwest Eye Consultants in Durango, Colorado can help stop further damage and preserve much of your vision.

Glaucoma Laser Treatment Options

To treat your glaucoma, our highly skilled eye surgeons use one or more of the following cutting-edge outpatient treatments:

  • Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) – This type of laser treatment is for patients diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma. The eye surgeon uses a laser to improve the drainage of fluid and eventually relieve eye pressure. However, it may take from 1 to 3 months for results to occur. SLT can be used as a primary treatment for glaucoma or if prescription eye drops prove ineffective or cause intolerable side effects. The effect of SLT typically lasts between 1-5 years.
  • Laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) – This type of laser treatment is for people who have angle-closure glaucoma. The ophthalmologist uses a laser to create a tiny hole in the outer edge of the iris, which creates an opening in the drainage angle and allows the fluid to drain properly.
  • Laser cyclophotocoagulation – This form of laser therapy treats areas of the middle layer of your eye to reduce fluid production. There are two types of laser technology: transscleral cyclophotocoagulation and endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation, both of which use laser energy to alter the fluid-forming cells in the eye so that they produce less fluid, thus lowering eye pressure.

The benefits of glaucoma laser treatment include improved glaucoma control, lowering eye pressure to a level that will stop further visual loss, and reducing the pain associated with increased eye pressure.
